The State of Things

Today’s post (unfortunately . . . ?) does not have very much to do with language. It has to do with something that bothers me, however, and I figure I might as well post it here. So here goes.

For my Journalism class, I have to buy a newspaper at least once a week (we’re putting together a clippings portfolio, and we can’t just print stories off the Internet). I’m actually kind of happy about it; I’ve always liked reading actual newspapers, even though reading stories off the Internet is more convenient (and generally more timely). What other time of the week do I have the opportunity to waste away a couple hours sitting in my pyjamas, reading the news, and drinking coffee? So this morning, I moseyed on down to the gas station a couple blocks down to buy my Sunday New York Times.

Now, I haven’t bought a paper in quite some time, and I am aware of the fact that the Sunday papers typically cost more than the papers on the other days–this may not be news to some of you. However, this morning, I paid $6 for my newspaper. For just the one day. It represents a sad state of the world that newspaper companies have to charge $6 per paper to stay in business.

Moral of the Story: Start buying newspapers.
